The Cost of Passing
They always see a Black man first.
Everything else gets erased
even though it's still very much there.
When you pass,
your queerness becomes invisible.

The mirror knows his past
It’s a window through his eyes
The body keeps a score,
a memory

Transitioning
is often met with the assumption
that something will harden.

Unrepentant
I learned early that too loud meant too much.
Too much meant trouble.
Keep your head down. Eyes closed. Don’t question authority. Don’t take up too much space.
I was very good at it.
